HOPKINSVILLE, KY - Marie Shipley Young, age 93, of Herndon, KY passed away at 6:40 PM Sunday, November 25, 2012 at Christian Health Center of natural causes.
Mrs. Young was born October 30, 1919 in Hindsville, Arkansas, the daughter of the late Daniel Webster and Stella Woods Shipley. She was educated at John Brown University, Siloam Springs, AR (BS), University of Kentucky (MS), Austin Peay State University, University of Arkansas and Murray State University. She taught Home Economics and other subjects at Lexington, KY, and in Christian County, KY. Mrs. Young was the high school guidance counselor for many years at Christian County High School. She previously worked with NYA, and the Farm Security Administration in Arkansas and Louisiana. She served in the US Navy Reserve (WAVE) during WWII and was voluntarily discharged in 1950. She retired from counseling in 1985, and operated a U-Pick berry until 1999. She was saved at age, 11, and joined the Shady Grove Methodist Church near Fayetteville, AR. She was a member of Herndon United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher, and member of Nancy Fentress United Methodist Women. She was a member of the
Locust Grove Homemakers, and was a director of Pennyrile Citizen Bank where she was a sectary of the Board, and Pennyrile Christian Community, a member of the Retired Teachers of Christian County, and the Delta Kappa Gramma and Kappa Delta Pi. She was also a volunteer for Widowed Person Service.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry M. Young Jr. in 1988, a pioneer in No Tillage farming and the author of a book of the same name. She was also preceded by her brothers, Paul and Eugene Shipley, and her sisters, Sibyl Shanks, and Imogene Dixon.
Survivors include her sons, John Shipley Young of Herndon, KY, Harry Major Young of Chicago, IL; her daughter, Jean Marie Delashmit of Atlanta, GA; her sisters, Marjorie Haynes of Azel, TX, and Orlena Pickens of Lexington, KY; thirteen grandchildren, two Step-grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at Maddux-Fuqua-Hinton Funeral Home with Rev. Daniel R. Swartz officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 from 5:00PM until 7:00PM at Maddux-Fuqua-Hinton Funeral Home in Hopkinsville.
