HOPKINSVILLE, KY - James J. (Jim) Major, 83, of Hopkinsville, KY, passed away on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 following a brief illness.
A lifelong resident of Christian County, he was born on December 8, 1928 the son of the late Bentley Clark “Preach” Major and Christine Wade Major. Upon graduation from Hopkinsville High School he served 2 years in the US Marine corp. He graduated from Murray State University and from Samford School of Pharmacy. He joined his father as a pharmacist in 1954 working for Major-Dray Drugs at the corner of 9th and Virginia St. He later expanded to Skyline Pharmacy, The Apothecary Shop on 18th St. and Indian Hill Drugs where he remained until he retired in 1997. In addition to the pharmacies, he was once co-owner of Major-Reed Chrysler Plymouth.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Nancy Sullivan Major, who passed away in 2006.
Jim Major is survived by three loving daughters and their families. Carolyn M. Sholar and her son, John Wade Sholar; and his father Wendell Sholar, Ellen M. Jolly and husband Scott and their three children, Mary Sullivan Jolly, James Ballard Jolly, and Nancy Ellen Jolly, and Mary Catherine Smith and her two daughters, Catherine Clark Smith and Sally Crenshaw Smith.
Services will be 11:00a.m. Friday, December 7, 2012 at Hughart & Beard Funeral Home in Hopkinsville, with the Dr. Tom Martin and Dr. Rachel Yarbrough officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Hughart & Beard Funeral Home.
