hab1OWENSBORO, Ky. (7/10/13) -- Habitat for Humanity Owensboro is coming up on its twenty-fifth anniversary this September, but the milestone isn’t slowing the volunteer homebuilder agency down from doing some major work in the local area in the meantime.
On June 9, Habitat Owensboro volunteers completed and dedicated two houses located on W. 4th St. One of the houses was built by Brescia University and Owensboro Catholic High School students and was sponsored by the catholic diocese.
The two families were able to move into the Habitat for Humanity homes numbers 107 and 108 on W. 4th St. on June 11. Excessive rain in the area has hindered the program from completing the yard work but the families are just glad to be moved in, said Virginia Braswell, Executive Director.
hab2On June 13 through the 15, Habitat for Humanity built their 109th house for their ’Women’s Buildathon’ weekend. Five women from the Lexington area led other local women to set the inside and outside walls and set 50-foot tresses.
“It was a ‘wow moment’ to see those tresses in the air, people in the rafters setting, and me on the floor praying,” Braswell said.
Since then, a roof, windows, and doors have been put on the W. 9th Street House. Next door, the 110th home will start its build July 22 through the 26 led by a group from Fenton, Michigan’s St. John the Evangelist Church.
The Owensboro Family Y will sponsor a Help Build Hope build August 9 and 10. Two more houses will go up that weekend with the aid of teams consisting of four to six people.
Celebrating their 25th anniversary house, Habitat for Humanity Owensboro will host a CEO build September 1. Local CEOs will bring $1,000 and work on the 113th home. For every $20,000 raised, GE and a former member of the GE board will match and donate the funds to Habitat for Humanity.
