HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. - Dr. Marion Lewis Smith of Nashville, TN and Christian County, KY.
Dr. Smith passed away peacefully at home on August 19th, 2013. He was born on Feb. 19, 1925 in Hopkinsville, KY, to Marion Walker Williams Smith and Clyde Smith. He was raised on Adelbert Farm, a thoroughbred horse breeding farm on South Virginia Street. Dr. Smith attended the University of Louisville as an undergraduate. After his sophomore year, he left the University of Louisville and entered Vanderbilt Medical School, and graduated in 1949. He did his internship at Emory/Grady Memorial in Atlanta, Georgia and residency at Harvard/Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. During World War II, Dr. Smith was enlisted in the Navy V12 program as a 1st Lieutenant. During the Korean War, he was a medical officer with the rank of Captain and stationed in Nancy, France. After the war, he returned to Nashville and founded Anesthesiology Associates in Nashville and remained in private practice for many years. Upon retirement, he actively managed his family farm, Bell Farms, in Oak Grove, KY. His interests were farming, history, aviation, and genealogy. He was an active member of the Meriwether Society, being a direct descendant of Nicholas Meriwether.
He was married to Katherine Christopherson Smith for over 50 years, who predeceased him, along with one son, Marc Williams Smith. He is survived by his children, Clyde Meriwether Smith of Nashville, Lee Douglas Smith of Oak Grove, daughter Susan Smith Wharton (Dr. J. Marcus Wharton) of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina and Eric Martin Smith (Dana Hunt Smith) of Oak Grove, along with seven granddaughters.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
