HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. - William Graham Duncan IV, 77, of Hopkinsville, Ky passed away at 8:00 p.m. Saturday, October 19, 2013 at his residence following a long illness.
A native of Hopkinsville, KY he was born December 9, 1935 the son of the late William Graham Duncan III and Elizabeth Fort Duncan.
He attended Hopkinsville public schools and graduated from the Purdue University School of Agriculture in 1957. He farmed from 1957 until 1976, later operating an aviation business in Clarksville, TN. He served in the United States Air Force from 1958 – 1961, serving in Florida and Germany. He was discharged with the rank of First Lieutenant.
He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, in which he served in various capacities including: Deacon, Elder, Clerk of the Session, delegate to numerous meetings of Presbytery and Synod Committees, Board Member of the Presbyterian Foundation, and other positions. He was a long-time choir member and a teacher of Sunday School classes.
He was a long-time member and past president of the Anthenaeum Society and the Church Hill Community Club. He was a member of the Christian County Historical Society, Friends of the Library, a former Rotarian and member of the Rotary Student Loan Committee, member of the Red Cross Board of Directors, and served his community in various other civic responsibilities.
He was active for a number of years in Republican politics, serving as Precinct Committeeman, County Chairman, and First District Chairman. He managed successful campaigns locally for the late Senator John Sherman Cooper and the late Governor Louie B. Nunn and was a state chairman for the successful 1972 campaign of the late President Richard M. Nixon. He served as a member of the Ky Council on Public Higher Education during the tenure of Governor Nunn.
Survivors include his wife: Mary Alice Major Duncan; his sons: William Graham Duncan V (Kelly) of Owensboro, KY and Chaplain Lieutenant Colonel Rives Major Duncan United States Air Force (Jan) of Colorado Springs, CO; his daughter: Andrea Duncan Craft (David) of Lakewood, CO; eight grandchildren; and three great granddaughters.
Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 26, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Anthony Barta and Rev. Charlie Evans officiating. The body was cremated. Hughart & Beard Funeral Home in Hopkinsville is in charge of the arrangements.
