James L. Smith, 67 of Utica

smith jamesOWENSBORO, KY - James L. Smith, 67 of Utica, passed away Friday, March 30, 2012, at home surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born on December 25, 1944 in Breckinridge County to the late Henry F. (Joe) Smith and Lilly R. Aldridge.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Dale Smith.

James worked 30 years for Green Coal Company before retiring from Unifirst Corporation in 2006.

James was a loving Husband and father. He enjoyed coon hunting, dancing, listening to country music and trading for any Dat Bum Knife, gun or dog.

Mr. Smith is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Bonnie Smith; a daughter, Cindy (Brian) Short of Calhoun; a son, Derrick Smith of Owensboro; a friend who was like a son, Jeremy Crowder of Owensboro; two granddaughters, Megan and Mackenzie Short; a brother Marshall (Janie) of Utica; two sisters, Wanda (Sonny) Hagan of Utica and Peggy (Sherman) Knight of Owensboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral home 10 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2012, with Brother Harry Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Calhoun Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday and after 8:30 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Western KY Hospice, 5917 Wathens Crossing, Owensboro, KY 42301. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
