OWENSBORO, Ky. - Ronald Eugene Hertel, age 64, of Owensboro, KY passed away Monday, February 25, 2013, at Robley Rex VA Medical Center in Louisville, KY. He was born October 14, 1948 in Lafayette, IN to Doris Irene Hertel and the late Eugene Albert Hertel. He graduated from Owensboro High School in 1966 and attended Western KY University. He bravely served in the United States Navy for four years. Upon returning home he was employed by Parr Trucking Service and then West Express Trucking Co. He was of Christian faith, and has been described by friends as a true servant. All who met him saw him as a kind-hearted, generous and compassionate man. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. His strength throughout his journey was amazing, and his determination incredibly inspiring. Ronnie, as his closest friends called him, loved the simple joys of life. He loved being outdoors, biking, boating and going everywhere in his favorite Jeep, always with his loving dog by his side. His most cherished things in life were not mere objects, but his loving family and loyal friends. He loved to tell the best stories, to laugh, make others laugh and seemed to have substantial knowledge about any subject imaginable. If ever there were a problem that needed to be solved, he would drop everything and do whatever was needed, often with tools and a plan. He was known as a carefree man who, when asked how he was doing that day, good or bad, would reply with a calm and pleasant voice, "Simply wonderful."
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his son, Benjamin Alan Hertel of San Francisco, CA; daughter, Allison Rae Reid (Michael James) of Louisville, KY; two grandchildren, Aubrey Elizabeth Reid and Anna Katherine Reid; his mother, Doris Irene Hertel of Owensboro, KY; and a sister, Pamela Ann Fifield (Michael Dennis) of Owensboro, KY.
Services will be held at 6 p.m. on February 28, 2013 at the Chapel of James H. Davis Funeral Home & Crematory in Owensboro, KY. Visitation is from 2-6 p.m. on February 28, 2013 at the funeral home.
