OWENSBORO, Ky. - Gerald Park Wellman, 73, of Owensboro, KY passed away Thursday, February 28th, 2013 at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville from complications related to neuro-invasive West Nile encephalitis.
He was born December 24, 1939 to Thelma Park Marksberry and the late James "Buddy" Wellman. Gerald was a lifelong resident of Owensboro and a 1958 graduate of Owensboro High School. He received a Bachelor's Degree from Western Kentucky University in 1963 and a Master's Degree in 1968. He was retired from the Owensboro Independent School System where he worked for 30 years as a teacher, coach and school administrator. He was a true problem solver and a man of action. He was admired greatly by many of the teaching staff for his leadership and guidance especially related to student disciplinary issues.
Gerald lettered in basketball, football, baseball and track in high school and went on to play football at Western Kentucky University. He was an avid golfer and throughout his life embraced many different activities including fishing, tennis and racquetball. Gerald also enjoyed searching for American Indian artifacts and amassed an extensive collection.
Survivors include his wife Kim Wellman of Owensboro; two children, Jennifer Wellman (Todd Carris) of Fort Thomas, Kentucky, and Gerald Park Wellman, Jr. (Jamie) of Nashville, Tennessee; three grandchildren, Charles Owen Carris, Grace Katherine Carris, Jackson Park Wellman; mother Thelma Park Marksberry of Owensboro; brother James E. Wellman (Susan) of Owensboro and several nephews, nieces and cousins.
Services will be at 10 am Tuesday, March 5th at James H. Davis Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel. Burial will follow at Red Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Utica. Visitation will be from 4-8 pm on Monday, March 4th and after 9 am on Tuesday.
