Girl Scouts: Cookies, Cakes, and Celebration

gs 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (3/31/13) – Everyone knows that it’s Girl Scout cookie season, but the Girls Scouts of Kentuckiana- Hopkins County troops are doing more for the community than selling cookies.

The local troops celebrated the Girl Scouts of America’s 101st anniversary this month on Tuesday, March 12. Girl Scouts from troops 63, 90, 948, and 1593 had a celebration walk in down town Madisonville that started at the old courthouse steps, where they had pictures made. They traveled down to the American Red Cross building at 111 South Main Street afterward for a tour and party.

Once the girls arrived at the Red Cross, they ate cookies and cupcakes and sang birthday songs, along with reciting The Girl Scout Promise and The Laws. They were given a tour of the Red Cross building and contemplated ideas on what they could donate. They each discussed what they want to be when they grow up. All of the girls had many different aspirations for their future goals and careers, showing their enthusiasm and motivation.

It is a role of Girls Scouts to teach values to its members, fostering a broad range of skills and character qualities, recognizing them for their accomplishments, and enabling them to take part in numerous different community service activities.

Girl Scout membership is organized according to grade levels, and the activities are designed accordingly. The girls of Hopkins County Girl Scout troops are consistently involved in significant service work in the Madisonville community. The local troops are currently collecting aluminum can tabs throughout the year to contribute to Ronald McDonald House Charities. They collect the tabs all year long and deliver them on Election Day annually in order to aid in supporting the charity.
