ky trans videoOWENSBORO, Ky. (4/4/13) – A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to shift and divert traffic at the intersection of Ky. 56 and Ky. 81 in Daviess County on Monday, April 8.

This traffic shift and diversion is to facilitate ongoing construction of the new roundabout at the southwest edge of Owensboro.

The traffic diversion will begin on Ky. 81/Calhoun-Owensboro Road at the south end of the project and extend to the intersection with Ky. 56/West Parrish Avenue. The diversion will create a 90 degree “T” intersection at Ky. 56 and Ky. 81.

Motorists should take note that all northbound traffic on Ky. 81/Calhoun-Owensboro Road will be required to stop at the intersection. The traffic diversion will allow the contractor to remove the existing section of Ky. 81 and move ahead with the construction of the roundabout. The diversion will be in place for several months.

This work zone at the southwest edge of Owensboro is at Ky. 56 mile point 14.1 and Ky. 81 mile point 11.036.

The intersection of Ky. 81/Calhoun-Owensboro Road and Ky. 56/West Parrish Avenue handles about 13,000 vehicles each day.

While roundabouts have been widely used across the country, this is only the fifth constructed on a Kentucky highway.

Yager Materials, LLC, of Owensboro is the prime contractor on the $1,435,918 highway improvement project. The roundabout, targeted to be ready for traffic at the end of 2013, is aimed at improving safety and traffic flow at the busy intersection.
