OWENSBORO, Ky. - Sherman A. Wilson, 79, of Owensboro, KY passed away on Sunday, April 07, 2013 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. He was born on August 30, 1933 in Daviess County to the late Okrie M. Wilson and Ruth Blan Wilson Carman. Sherman was a member of the Southside Church of Christ, where he formerly served as an elder. He is preceded in death by his sister, Sonja Zaumeyer and brother-in-law, Jerry Shelton.
Sherman was a sports writer for the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer for about two years in the 1950s, and for the Louisville Courier-Journal from 1959-1963. Most of his working career was spent in the insurance industry in various forms. He worked for Shelton Adjustment Service and Meridian Mutual Insurance Company as an insurance adjuster, for a total of nine years. Next, he worked for National Casualty Company and Maryland Casualty Company as marketing representative for a total of 7 years. Finally, he was owner and President of Insurance Center of Owensboro, Inc., for almost 30 years before retiring in December 31, 1997. Following retirement from his agency, he worked as Secretary/Treasurer of Girl Friday-Man Friday of Owensboro, and as an Area Coordinator of CETUSA, a foreign exchange student organization, for six years.
Sherman held state licenses as a Property/Casualty Insurance Agent, a Life and Health Insurance Agent, and a Property/Casualty Insurance Consultant and was the only agent in Owensboro to hold this license as well as one of about 45 individuals in the state. He attended KY Wesleyan College in 1951-52, his first year in Owensboro, and the University of Louisville and was awarded the professional designation of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters (CPCU) by the American Institute of Property & Casualty Underwriters of Malvern, Pennsylvania, in 1968.
He served as President of the Independent Insurance Agents of Owensboro from 1974-75, and as President of the KY Chapter of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters in 1976. He was a member of the Education Committee of the state association for many years and participated in various insurance seminars throughout the state as well as teaching seminars for the Independent Insurance Agents of KY for many years. He also taught insurance courses for the Business Department majors of KY Wesleyan College for three years in 1977, 1978, and 1979.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Jean Shelton Wilson; two sons, Kerry Allen (Sheila)Wilson, Dennis Howard (Paula) Wilson; two daughters, Cynthia (Bill) Wickerham and Kimberly (Greg) Bruner; 13 grandchildren, Matthew (Rita) Wilson, Melissa Wilson, Myron (Meredith) Wilson, Mayerly Wilson, Paola Wilson, Wilson Wickerham, Coulter (Lauren) Wickerham, Tyler (Kelley) Wickerham, Christopher (Beth) Wilson, Elizabeth (Jim) Warnock, Madelynne Wilhoite, Morgan (Sean) Hayden, Moriah Wilhoite; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles Carman; two sisters, Brenda Morris of Owensboro and Marilyn Retallick of Bowling Green; three sisters-in-law, Carolyn (Jerry) Maddox, Judy (Charlie) Reeves, and Judy Shelton and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at the Chapel of James H. Davis Funeral Home & Crematory in Owensboro. Burial will follow in Rosehill Cemetery in Owensboro. Visitation will be on Monday from 4:00-8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday after 11:00a.m. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Heart Association.
