Hugh L. Whittaker, Jr., 87, of Owensboro, KY

OWENSBORO, Ky. - Hugh L. Whittaker, Jr., 87, of Owensboro, KY passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2013 at his home. He was born on September 29, 1925 in Tampa, FL to the late Hugh L., Sr. and Edith Holt Whittaker. Hugh was a member of Buena Vista Baptist Church, a U. S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, and a graduate of Murray State University with a degree in music. He was the founder of the Owensboro Community Band , and throughout his life, enjoyed music, singing, and playing all types of instruments. He has served as the minister of music with several churches and taught music in both the City and County school systems. He has performed in many plays and was in one of the first plays presented at the Theater Workshop of Owensboro around 1966. He enjoyed playing with the KY Wesleyan College Pepband at ballgames from time to time and was an avid U. K. basketball fan. Hugh’s parents were also musicians and performers.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Gerri Whittaker, a son, Hugh R. “Randy” Whittaker and wife Rachael of Owensboro, five daughters, Terri Lynn Alexander of Longview, TX, Judith Laine Fowler and husband Tom of Kansas City, MO, Deborah Jean Whittaker of Owensboro, Merrie Carol Ward and husband Roger of Plano, TX, and Christi Ann Moore and husband Jimmy of Calhoun, 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, and several step grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, April 18, at Buena Vista Baptist Church with military honors following. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 P.M. Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory and after 10:00 A.M. Thursday at the church.
