Gertrude M. Castlen, 89, of Stanley

OWENSBORO, Ky. - Gertrude M. Castlen, 89, of Stanley went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 26, 2013, at the Carmel Home surrounded by her children. She was born July 23, 1923, in Daviess County to the late John Basil Calhoun and Mary Augusta Clements Calhoun.

She was a member of St. Peter of Alcantara Catholic Church. She attended grammar school at the one room Smock School and High School at Mount Saint Joseph Academy. She also earned her teaching degree at Mount Saint Joseph Junior College for Women. She taught at Stanley Elementary School and West Louisville Elementary School before marrying Paul Castlen. She also worked as a substitute teacher for many years at St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Stanley, when not working in the school’s cafeteria. She dedicated her life to seeking knowledge of God’s will in her life, courage to carry it out, and obedience to whatever God asked of her. She showed unselfish love to everyone she met, sharing her Catholic faith with many whose lives intersected her own.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Paul Castlen I (2000); her son Joseph Paul Castlen II (2004); her son-in-law Dean Whitehouse (2007); and her siblings, Marie Thompson, Wendell Calhoun, Pauline Maness and Charlie (Chuck) Calhoun.

She is survived by twelve of her children, seven daughters and five sons: Barbara (Larry) Erpenbeck of Union, KY.; Pat (Joe) Wuerth of Lanesville, Indiana, Jim Castlen of Owensboro, Betty Whitehouse of Owensboro, John Castlen of Lexington, Helen (Walter) Johnson of Lexington, Marti Castlen of Owensboro; Connie (Randy) Cowan of Lexington, Jackie Castlen of Owensboro, Mark (Christine) Castlen of Owensboro, Charlie (Lisa) Castlen of Owensboro, and George Castlen of Lexington.

In addition to these she is survived by her daughter-in-law, Nancy Castlen of Owensboro; her brother James L. (Dorothy) Calhoun of St. Joseph, KY; thirty-four grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren.

Services will be10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter of Alcantara Catholic Church with Father Bruce Fogle officiating and burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at Haley McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home with the Rosary being said at 7:00 p.m. and visitation on Tuesday from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Carmel Home Building Fund, 2501 Old Hartford Road, Owensboro, KY 42303. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
