OWENSBORO, Ky. - Mary Helen Hamilton Murphy, 97, of Curdsville, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at the Carmel Home. Mary Helen was born August 5, 1915 in Daviess County to the late Ben and Maggie Hamilton. She was a descendant of the O’Flynn pioneer family and the last surviving child of the Ben Hamilton family. She retired from Owensboro-Daviess County Hospital in 1980. She enjoyed her family, gardening, quilting and working crossword puzzles.
Aside from her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Hugh Murphy (1955), a son, Jim Murphy (2004) two sisters, Bessie Fogle and Frances Stallings and a brother, Ed Hamilton.
Surviving are two sons, Tom Murphy of Owensboro, Bill (Marie) Murphy of Paducah; six daughters, Peggy (Bob) McCarthy of Curdsville, Sister Nancy Murphy OSU of Maple Mount, Monica (Mike) Blandford of Maceo, Sally (Bill) Buford, Mary (Ed) Riney all of Owensboro, Betty (Mike ) Rogers of Shepherdsville; 27 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church with Father Carl McCarthy officiating and burial to follow in St. Alphonsus Cemetery.
Visitation will be at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday and at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. Friday. Prayers will be held Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Helen Murphy Scholarship Fund, Carmel Home, Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph or to St. Elizabeth Catholic Church Building Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the Carmelite Sisters and staff of the Carmel Home who have given Mom much loving care over the years.
