Douglas R. Smith 70, of Island, Ky

heartcloudOWENSBORO, Ky. - Douglas R. Smith 70, of Island, Ky passed away Monday, June 24, 2013 at the Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. Douglas Ray Smith was born January 12, 1943 in Muhlenberg County, Ky to the late Dellard and Opal Rickard Smith and was married to the former Jenny Ruth Blakeley on June 11, 1965. Doug retired as a Tow Boat Engineer with Yeager Materials and was a U.S. Army Veteran. He loved hunting, fishing, University of Ky Basketball and his greatest passion was his family and Sunday Dinners at his house with family, friends, and neighbors. He was the happiest when sharing his fishing lakes with friends, especially children. In addition to his parents, Doug was preceded in death by a grandson, Jacob Hidenrite; by a brother, Carlos Smith; and by a sister, Irma Mahlosky.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Jenny Smith; a son, Bill Smith and wife, Donna of Island; a daughter, Cristina Smith Ellis of Island; three grandchildren, Mallory Smith, Rachel Smith, and Mason Hidenrite; his buddy, Jodie Buergey; and two brothers, Leonard Smith and Glenn Smith both of Bremen.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel with the Rev. Terry Fortner officiating. Burial will be in the New Cypress Cemetery in McLean County with Military Honors conducted by the McLean County Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post # 5415. Friends may visit with Doug's family from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday and from 9:00 A.M. until time of services Thursday at Musters in Calhoun.

The Douglas R. Smith family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Benefit Fund of McLean County; C/O Karen Davis; P.O. Box 103; Sacramento, Ky 42372. Memorial contribution envelopes will be available at Musters in Calhoun.
