Rachel Pentecost Comes Home

rachel 300GREENVILLE, Ky. (7/18/13) – On Tuesday, May 21, 19-year-old Rachel L. Pentecost of Greenville was involved in a one-vehicle accident on a dark, rain-slick portion of Highway 431 South near Dunmor. The Muhlenberg County Sheriff's Department report stated that the car left the road, slid down an embankment and struck a tree. Officials and doctors alike were amazed that Pentecost survived the crash.
 
Today, Wednesday July 17th, less than two months after the mishap, Ms. Pentecost has returned from Vanderbilt Hospital to Greenville. Just as the courthouse bell struck 1:00 p.m., the streets were lined with well-wishers in "Prayers for Rachel" t-shirts, and cheers went up as Rachel, who wave from one of the cars in a long escort of police, fire, and EMS vehicles drove by.
 
Many know Rachel, while others know only of her inspiring story that has unfolded over the past few weeks. Tens of thousands from around the world have followed her miraculous recovery on the Facebook page.
 
Hundreds have held prayer vigils, concerts, beauty pageants, and numerous other fundraisers to help do what they can to cover the medical expenses. All have shared in witnessing a miracle in the making.
 
Rachel pentecost sis 300Rebecca Pentecost HaleyRachel's sister, Rebecca Pentecost Haley, stood today on the Greenville Courthouse square, hugging and thanking well-wishers as her sister rode by on her way home.
 
Ms. Haley summed up the entire family's feelings to SurfKY News Reporters.
 
"I just want to thank the community for all their support,” said Haley. “Everybody has been so wonderful. Obviously, by the crowd that's turned out today, everybody loves her. We are all so happy to see her home. Just by the grace of God she is here with us. It's truly a miracle."
 
"There are still several more fund raisers coming up,” she continued. “And Rachel is facing at least a couple more surgeries. But compared to what she has already been through over the past 2 months, we know that God will continue to give her strength."
 
"We were always raised to trust in God and taught from an early age that He would bring us through any trial,” she said. “That's what He did with Rachel. As hard as it was for her, we just had to put it in God's hands and He answered the many prayers sent up for us."
 
Although Rachel is now home, the community continues to do what it can to help, with a 5K Run For Rachel fundraiser set for Saturday, July 27th at the Central City Convention Center. To find out more call Lindsay Ward at 270-757-1723. Click here to get the printable entry form.
