'Ahoy Me Hearties,' it’s National Talk Like a Pirate Day

talk pirate 300FRANKFORT, Ky. (9/19/13) – National Talk Like a Pirate Day, falls annually on September 19 and is one of the most enthusiastic internet –based holidays where people can have fun and well, talk like a pirate. The two guys who created this holiday are just as fun and spunky as the holiday itself.

On June 6, 1995, Mark Summers and John Baur were playing racquetball and their moaning, groaning and cheering soon turned into pirate slang which made the game more enjoyable. This struck the idea of Talk Like a Pirate Day. Summers came up with the actual day, which was his ex-wife’s birthday and the only date he could remember that didn’t fall on another holiday.

The guys also got the idea and decided that Dave Barry, who is a national syndicated humor columnist and winner of the Pulitzer Prize would be their spokesperson. After sending emails to Dave Barry, he soon responded and wrote a column that was published on September 8, 2002 encouraging people to participate and celebrate in the National Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Years later, National Talk Like a Pirate Day has been smooth sailing and has become very popular internationally.
