Scoping It Out: Does Anyone Really Have It 100 Percent Together?

text messageOWENSBORO, Ky. (9/19/13) - I’ve always thought that by the time I graduated college, I thought I would have it all together. And mostly, I do. I have a job that I like, in the field that I love. I’m financially independent and I have great friends and family. On the outside and on paper, I’ve got it all together, but really it’s only like 75 percent together.

The perfect example would require me to take off my boots and show you that I have two totally different socks on today. One is red with white polka dots and one is a sock that I received as a Christmas present years ago with a cat dressed in a Santa Claus costume. This is no joke. My mom used to get so mad at me because I would throw all of my single socks in a drawer and never pair them together. Thus, a drawer full of individual socks and me blindly picking out two random socks. But, if you think about it the way I do, two non-matching socks still do the same job as two matching socks.

I’m late for everything. I even bought a watch so I could monitor the time it takes me to get to wherever I want to go. It didn’t help. This is probably because my life is in a constant state of looking for my car keys. But, I just had them! 15 minutes later…They’re either A) In my purse where they always are; or B) Locked in my car.

Anyone could tell that I don’t have it all together when I’m stressed or anxious, which just happens to be a big portion of my life. I often take on too many things in my schedule because I think I can handle it. It looks like I’m ambitious and driven when in actuality I’ve spread myself too thin. I eventually handle it all, but not without fret and sometimes regret.

So basically what I’m trying to say is that I’ve learned it’s okay to not have it all together all the time. I will always have one part of me that is not completely and one hundred percent together. There are two types of people out there, those with matching socks and those without. And I just happen to be the latter. I find joy in knowing that there are other people like me out there. How boring would this world be if everyone wore matching socks? I’m the type of person who has bad luck, I’m clumsy, and things don’t often come easy to me, but it’s who I am and I’m slowly learning to accept that.
