Can Massage Therapy Prevent Colds, Flu?

massage therapist 300WESTERN KENTUCKY (12/30/13) — As the calendar turns the page into a new year, many people turn over a new leaf in personal improvements. Better nutrition and leading a healthier lifestyle are among some of the most common new year's resolutions.

While eating more healthy and naturally has long been a component of a healthier lifestyle, many are also seeking natural choices in healing techniques and maintaining good health. Long known as a natural alternative for pain relief, massage therapy is increasingly being sought for its preventative approach to bolster immunity against illness.

“If you wait until you're sick, it's too late,” said Brenda Rogers of Medical Center Bodyworks in Greenville. “But clients, who have routine massage therapy, have better circulation, which helps the body maintain health.”

Rogers said regular massage therapy helps reduce stress while increasing immune response to illnesses such as a cold or flu. It increases overall health and improves blood and lymph circulation, she said.

“Setting a goal of even once a month, will help benefit circulation,” said Rogers. “It is good for young people, who are athletes, as well as elderly people.”

As part of her therapy, Rogers advises all her clients to maintain proper hydration in feeling better and being healthier.

“If you've already gotten sick, you need lots of liquids to rehydrate yourself,” said Rogers. “But there's a lot of benefits to keeping your muscles well hydrated.”

Rogers said muscles that are dehydrated shrink and are more tender and painful.

For more information on the benefits of massage therapy, call Rogers at (270) 338-9830.
