OWENSBORO, Ky. – Marietta Wilson Fleming, 97, of Owensboro passed away Friday, July 11, 2014 at her daughter's home after a lengthy illness. She was born September 22, 1916 in Livingston County, Ky. to the late Shelley O. and Mattie Thompson Wilson. She graduated from Livingston County High after being promoted ahead two years. She received a full scholarship to Draughns College in Paducah. There she met and married her life-long love, Chester Fleming, in 1936. As they were blessed with children, she became a full-time housewife and mother. She returned to work at Mattingly School, where she loved her special people. She retired from the school system and worked in the Senior Companion Program and retired again at the age of 83. Marietta was a member of First Christian Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Chester L. Fleming; sons, Allen (Butch) Fleming and Robert Fleming; a daughter, Shirley Newcom; one grandson, Scotty Fleming; two brothers, Russell Wilson and S. O. Wilson; and a sister, Margaret McGrew.
Survivors include two sons, John R. (Marilyn) Fleming of Louisville, and Jessie (Diane) Fleming of Cocoa, Fla.; a daughter, Sue Medley (Wayne) Hall of Owensboro; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Fleming of Louisville; fourteen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Wanda McGrew of Smithland, Ky.; several nieces and nephews; and her special caretaker, Terri Thorp.
Services are at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, July 14, 2014, at the Chapel of James H. Davis Funeral Home & Crematory in Owensboro. Burial will follow in Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation is from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
