Edgar Louis Hamby, 90, of Owensboro, Kentucky

 

obit21OWENSBORO, KY - Edgar Louis Hamby, 90, of Owensboro, Kentucky passed away Tuesday, November 22, 2011, at his home.

He was born on November 18, 1921 in Dawson Springs, KY to the late Maude and Edgar Lee Hamby. He received a BS degree from Western Kentucky University and taught agriculture for two years at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY. He was a salesman for Green River Appliance until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and deacon emeritus and also taught Sunday school. He was a Mason and had been awarded the honor of Kentucky Colonel. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 247th Combated Engineer BN in England, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany, and was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for breaking through the Seigfred Line. On December 21, 1946, he married Hazel Marie Tuttle, who preceded him in death on November 4, 2007.

He is survived by his daughters, Debra Hale and Lisa Kakassy and their husbands, Steve Hale and Tony Kakassy; three grandchildren, Melody Hale, Joshua Hale and Adison Kakassy; three step-grandchildren, Brooke Kakassy, Eve Hobgood and Anthony Kakassy, III; two sisters, Mable Ruth Buzzard, of Venice, FL and Geneva McGavock Robinson of St. Louis, MO and two nieces, Barbara Nostrant and Rebecca Slanker.

Services are at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 25, 2011, at Macedonia Baptist Church. Burial with military honors will follow in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation is from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Friday at Macedonia Baptist Church. James H. Davis Funeral Home & Crematory in Owensboro is in charge of arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice of Western Kentucky, 3419 Wathens Crossing, Owensboro, KY 42301 or to Macedonia Baptist Church, 4839 Millers Mill Road, Owensboro, KY 42303.
