OWENSBORO, KY - Rachael Kamuf, age 62, passed away earlier this week at her home in Louisville. She was a longtime member of the Kentucky journalism community.
Kamuf's long career in journalism took her from weekly newspapers to wire services to specialty publications around Kentucky. Most recently she had been director of publications for the Kentucky Farm Bureau, and before that she was an editor at Louisville Eccentric Observer (LEO). Prior to her stint at LEO, Kamuf covered the Louisville business community for 16 years, from 1984 through 2000, as a reporter at Business First. She was recruited to the paper in its startup phase and anchored the news staff through a long period of growth in scope of coverage and circulation for the weekly publication. Major stories she broke or reported on illustrate the major changes in Louisville business during her tenure there and included the sale of the former Bingham media companies; the split of Humana Inc.; the rise and fall of Vencor Inc.; expansions by Ford Motor Co.; plans for a NASCAR track in Gallatin County; the demise of Kentucky Central Life Insurance Co.; and the evolution of Churchill Downs from a one-track operation to one of the biggest players in the Thoroughbred industry.
Prior to Business First, Kamuf was a reporter for the Louisville bureau of the Associated Press wire service. Before joining the AP, she was editor and owner of The Whitley Republican in Williamsburg, Ky.
Kamuf was a graduate of the University of Kentucky School of Journalism and a devoted, lifelong fan of the Kentucky Wildcats. She also gave her time generously to a number of community and professional organizations over the years, including the Society of Professional Journalists, having served as president and in other board positions for the Louisville chapter. She was an avid gardener and raised roses at her home in the St. Matthews area and member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
A native of Owensboro, Kamuf was the oldest of 11 children and is survived by her siblings, Rose Hayden (Earl), Rick Kamuf, Paul Kamuf, Ronnie Kamuf (Kay), Rob Kamuf (Jane), Roger Kamuf (Susan), Randy Kamuf (Lisa), Nancy Kamuf (J.J.) Jones, Rita Jacobs (Marty) all of Owensboro, KY. and Becky Swoyer (Bob) of Greenville, SC. and dozens of nieces and nephews, for whom she was a loving and devoted aunt, mentor, and friend. She was the daughter of the late Richard Kamuf and Kathleen Garst Kamuf.
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home, 519 Locust St, Owensboro, KY and 8:00 to 9:30am Friday at the funeral home.
The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 6, 2012 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 4029 Frederica St., Owensboro. With Father Brad Whistle officiating and burial to follow in Resurrection Cemetery.
