Reverend Peter Edward Hughes, 61

obit21OWENSBORO, KY -  Reverend Peter Edward Hughes, 61,  passed away at Owensboro Medical Health System on Thursday, January 5, 2012. He was born in Johnstown, PA and was the son of the late James J. and Margaret Michinock Hughes.

He attended St. Coleman’s Elementary School, Mid Park Senior High, Trick Community College, St. Mary Seminary at St. Mary, KY, St. Pius X Seminary in Erlanger, KY, and Josephinum Seminary in Worthington, Ohio.

Father Hughes was ordained on June 6, 1981 at St. Stephen Cathedral by Bishop Henry J. Soenneker.

During his religious career, he ministered at the following places: Associate Pastor at Our Lady of Lourdes in Owensboro from 1981 until 1985, Pastored at the following parishes: St. Rose in Cloverport from 1985 until 1987, St. Mary of the Woods in McQuady from 1987 until 1990, St. Paul, Princeton and the Eddyville State Penitentiary from 1989 until 1992, St. Leo in Murray from 1992 until 1995, St. Romuald and Holy Guardian Angels in Hardinsburg from 1995 until 1998, Sts. Joseph and Paul from 1998 until 2000, Precious Blood and St. Sebastian in Calhoun from 2001 until 2004, St. Sebastian and St. Martins in Rome, KY in 2004, and St. Elizabeth, Curdsville and St. Martins from 2007 until July 2011.

Surviving are two brothers, Michael (Diane) Hughes of Westlake, OH and James (Diane) Hughes of Largo, FL, and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Mass will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, January 9 at St. Martins Catholic Church, Rome with Bishop William F. Medley celebrating. Visitation will be Monday from 8:00 A.M. until time of service at the church. Burial will be at a later date in Central City, PA.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Priest’s Retirement Fund, c/o the Diocese of Owensboro, 600 Locust St., Owensboro, KY 42301. Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory are in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be placed at www.glennfuneralhome.com.
