Rev. James O. Lively, 91, of Draffenville

 

obit13DRAFFENVILLE, KY - Rev. James O. Lively, 91, of Draffenville passed away Sunday at 11:45 a.m., at Lakeway Nursing Center in Benton.

James was an ordained minister of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and a member of Covenant Presbytery. He was the pastor of several churches in Kentucky and served actively at the presbyterial and denominational levels. He became semi-retired in 1989 after serving 40 years. He also was a retired public school teacher from the Daviess County School System in Owensboro.

He served in the United States Army from February 1, 1941 to November 30, 1945, with the 1st, 8th, 12th, and 2nd Armored Divisions during World War II. Thirteen months of his service career was spent in the E.T.O. During that time he received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Service Stars; the American Defense Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon, and Good Conduct medals. He was awarded the Distinguished Unit Badge with the 12th Armored Division (Hellcats); the Bronze Star Medal with the 12th Armored Division and the World War II Victory Medal.

While living in Petersburg, TN, 1993-1996, where his wife was serving as pastor there, James was the chaplain of the Petersburg Lions Club, and of the American Legion Post.

On returning to Kentucky, James continued in ministry in Covenant Presbytery of the CP Church. And he and his wife became Coordinators of the Wellness Program in the Lakeland Wesley Village Retirement Community near Kentucky Lake.

In January, 2000, James received the 2000 Minister's Service Award for Excellence in Tentmaking Ministry by the Commission on the Ministry of the CP Church.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Margaret Louella Basham Lively; one daughter, Marlene Shadowen (Kenneth) of Benton, KY; three sons: Stephen Lively (Mary) of Owensboro, KY, Noel Lively (Krista) of Crestwood, KY, and James W. Lively (Lynne) of Greeneville, TN; ten grandchildren, Jake and Jarrod Shadowen, Benton, KY; Rick Martin, Athens, GA, Jessica Lively Yaeger, Owensboro, KY, Chloe Lively Duncan, Huntsville, AL, Hannah Lively, Greeneville, TN; Sophie Lively, Greeneville, TN, and Nicole, Trevor, and Drew Lively all of Crestwood, KY.

He is also survived by four great grandchildren: Collin, Wilson, Sullivan, and John Case Shadowen all of Benton, KY; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Wesley and Artelia Patterson Lively of Breckinridge County, KY; an infant son, Donnie William Lively; three sisters, Marie De Witt, Lorine Robbins, and Della Harris; and five brothers, Jack Lively, John Lively, Arthur Lively, Joseph Lively, and Woodrow Lively, who passed away as an infant.

Funeral services for Rev. James Orville Lively will be held on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the Collier Funeral Chapel, Benton, KY, Rev. Charles Westfall, Rev. Wendell Ordway, and Rev. James W. Lively officiating.

Graveside Funeral Service will be held at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Irvington, KY at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 between the hours of 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. at Collier Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Memphis Theological Seminary, 168 East Parkway South, Memphis, TN, 38104.
