OWENSBORO, KY - Sister Elaine Byrne, 65, an Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph, passed away Jan. 20 at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 47th year of religious life. She was a native of Curdsville.
Sister Elaine was a creative and talented teacher and liturgy planner, and much loved by her students, friends and family. She taught at Trinity High School, Whitesville (1977-78), was principal and teacher at St. Peter of Alcantara, Stanley (1978-81), served in community vocation ministry (1991-98) and was pastoral associate at Precious Blood, Owensboro (1997-98). She also ministered at the Newman Center, Bowling Green, Ky., St. Thomas Moore in Paducah, and St. Jerome , Fancy Farm, and in Missouri, before retiring in 2011.
Sr. Byrne was preceded in death by her parents, John D. and Anna Marie Byrne, and a brother, John D. Byrne Jr.
Survivors include two sisters, Mary Lou (Darrell) Payne of Philpot and Margie (Jim) Rode of Whiteland, Ind.; three brothers, J.L. (Joan) Byrne, Tony (Betty) Byrne and Eddie (Alo) Byrne and a sister-in-law, Barbara Byrne, all of Owensboro; nieces and nephews, aunts , uncles, and the members of her religious community.
The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24 at Mount Saint Joseph, where visitation will begin Monday at 4 p.m., with a wake service following at 6:30 p.m.
