Benton Middle School Students Take Part in Virtual Stock Market

benton middle 500

BENTON, Ky. (2/20/13) – Mrs. Taylor Childress- Edwards's seventh grade social studies classes at Benton Middle School participated in the stock market game.

The stock market game is a virtual stock market for students to put their "money" into various stocks around the world. Before students started this game they had to study words that were associated with the stock market. The students were visited by local Edward Jones financial advisor, Rich Hendrickson. Rich put the complicated terms of the stock market into student friendly terms to help them understand how the stock market works.

The students were divided into teams and went to the computer labs to put their "money" in stocks. They each started with $100,000. Each team decided on the stocks they were going to buy. The students also learned about the difficulties of buying and selling stocks when the stock market was shut down during Hurricane Sandy. The students did a very good job and one of the classes placed regionally.

The students that contributed to the winning team were: Tanner Hayes, Rocky Reese, Ian Timpe and Faith Gossum.
