WK Outdoors – The Language of the Fisherman

wk smallmouthWESTERN Ky. (6/28/13) – All too often, one considers that the average fisherman will have the same language as the average redneck. This is not always the case.

While the majority of us anglers are proud to be called rednecks, there is a bit of difference from a “speaking” perspective. Yes, you will hear us say such words as “Ain’t” and “Y’all.” There is no doubt in that. It’s the way we grew up, and we are proud of it. If Y’all don’t like that, we don’t give a dang.

That said, let’s look at fishermen from the general perspective. Most non-anglers think we’re outright dumb. They don’t think our brain can handle technical language. Well, guess what. They are wrong!

Let’s take the average fisherman conversation, for example. Yes, he/she might say, “I’m goin’ fishin’.” However, it doesn’t end there. Let your average high-tech individual ask them what they are taking with them. The response would generally be something along the lines of, “A Zebco Ready Tackle 5’6” Freshwater Telescoping Spinning Rod and Reel Combo with 20 pound Monofilament Fishing Line.” This response would, no doubt, leave the techy with a dropped jaw, wondering, “What does that mean?”

Then there is usually the question, “What bait are you using?” The general redneck answer is something like, “It’s an Alabama Rig with multiple high-action twirl-tail Chartreuse jigs.” That alone should leave the average non-outdoorsman speechless.

Guess what? Outdoorsmen have a tech language too!

As for understanding the average angler, it’s a matter of actually dumbing it down. Follow this conversation…

Angler 1: I’ve got a Shimano Spirex 2500RG Reel with quickfire II 1-handed casting system, Propulsion Line Management System, Fluidrive II, Dyna Balance and Fightin’ Drag II with a Diawa Coastal Specialty Gulfcoast Inshore-live bait rod.

Angler 2: Well, I have an Abu Garcia BCX Round Reel Open Face mounted on an Element 21 Salty Carrot Stix Inshore Rod.

Now, translated into average English, this means…

Angler 1: I’ve got a very nice rod and reel.

Angler 2: Yours is better than mine.

It’s that simple. Speaking the language of fishermen is like learning an entirely new language unto itself. You just have to take time to learn it.

Another good example is…

Angler 1: What did you catch? I caught a 12 LB Flathead, a 3 pound Channel and a couple of largemouth.

Angler 2: I caught a 10 pound Blue, a couple of red ears, and one of them there cottonmouths.

Translation…

Angler 1: I caught one big catfish, one small one and a couple of bass.

Angler 2: You out-fished me. I caught one fairly large catfish, two bluegill and a snake.

It’s not a difficult language to understand. One just has to know the tech version of fishing. Hang out with an angler on a few fishing trips. You’ll pick it up.

Until next week, Ya’ll have yerself a great week!
