Henderson School District Plans Home Visit Blitz

Henderson County Schools 300HENDERSON, Ky. (7/1/13) – The third annual Home Visit Blitz includes all students K-12 in Henderson County Schools with the theme “There is No Place Like…Home Visit Blitz.” To view a YouTube video of this year’s theme, Click Here.

The Henderson County Schools Home Visit Blitz allows for each student to receive a brief visit from a staff member from his/her school. The blitz is a way to build relationships between the home, community, and schools before the school year starts. These visits to the homes of elementary, middle, and high school students will set the tone for a successful school year. Research shows parent, guardian, and community support is the most important way to improve school/ student achievement.

When parents, guardians, and the community are involved, students have:
- Higher grades, test scores, and graduation rates;
- Better school attendance;
- Increased motivation, better self-esteem;
- Lower rates of suspension;
- Decreased use of drugs and alcohol; and
- Fewer instances of violent behavior.

The 2013 Home Visit Blitz will take place on Tuesday, July 30, from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

While the staff of Henderson County Schools is visiting students, community members will be preparing lunch for the 800 plus staff members. Henderson County Schools Board of Education Chairman Ben Johnston and Henderson County Judge/Executive Hugh McCormick will lead a cooking team that will barbecue chickens at the Atkinson Park pits beginning at 4:30 a.m. Lunches will also include potato salad and beans from J&B BBQ and soft drinks from RC Cola. Lunches will be served in the cafeteria at Henderson County High School for in-town schools. Schools in the county will be served lunch at their respective schools.

On July 30 a “Kick Off Presentation” will take place at 9:30 a.m. in the Henderson County High School cafeteria with brief statements from guest speaker Chair of the Kentucky House of Representatives Education Committee Mr. Derrick Graham , and Kentucky Department of Education Chief of Staff Tommy Floyd. National Director of Regional Operations/Office of Communications and Outreach with the U.S. Department of Education Mr. Dennis Bega will also be in attendance. A special presentation will take place immediately after the statements.

The Home Visit Blitz will begin after the “Kick Off Presentation” at approximately 10: 30 a.m.
