Migrant Students Benefit from Digital Literacy Camp

Digital LiteracyLEXINGTON, Ky. (7/22/13) – Nearly two-dozen middle and high school students recently attended a two-day Digital Literacy Camp coordinated by the Migrant Education Program (MEP) in Fayette County Public Schools.

FCPS staff provided the Instructional Access MEP Technology Training through creative planning with the Southeast Regional Migrant Team. The initiative was featured at the 2013 National Migrant Education Conference in Orlando, and Fayette County's implementation was a first for Kentucky. Highlights included the youngsters' developing resumes and analyzing data using Microsoft Office and completing a skills, college and career interest inventory. The July 12-13 camp culminated with student presentations, a certificate ceremony and the awarding of brand new laptop computers and printers to each participant.

"A Computer at Home for Every Child" is a central philosophy of Instructional Access Inc., which has offered customized technology-based youth development training for at-risk populations for more than 15 years. The hands-on, instructor-led training uses relevant technology to help mitigate the academic, workforce development and social inequities that migrant students commonly face.
