Friday the 13 Ingrained from Ancient History

friday 13 300KENTUCKY (12/13/13) — It’s Friday the 13th and some people will not make it out of their beds because of a paralyzed fear of the superstitious day.

According to the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institution in Asheville, NC an estimated $800 to $900 million will be lost in business because people with either not fly or will not do their normal daily routine.

The phobia afflicts 17 to 21 million people in the United States alone. Symptoms may vary from mild anxiety to a full-blown panic attack. In some cases, people will either reshuffle their daily schedule or miss an entire day of work. It is also believed that those who already consider themselves to be “unlucky” are more likely to believe in superstitions related to bad luck.

The fear of Friday the 13th is rooted ancient, separate bad-luck associated with the number 13 and the day Friday and with the two combined only makes the day even more unlucky.

The fear of this day has also been traced back to a Norse myth about 12 gods having a dinner party and in walked the uninvited 13th guest Loki, who was known for mischievousness. Loki was able to blind the other gods with darkness and shot Balder, the god of day and gladness with a mistletoe-tipped arrow. After the death of Balder, the Earth went dark and mourned. From that moment on, the number 13 was deemed unlucky and foreboding.

In ancient Rome, a witch gathered in groups of 12 and with the 13th person was believed to be the devil himself.

Numerologists consider the number 12 to be a “complete” number. For example; 12 months in a year, 12 zodiac signs, 12 gods of Olympus, 12 labors of Hercules, 12 tribes of Israel and 12 apostles of Jesus. By exceeding 12 by one, 13 is associated by bad luck, which is a little beyond completeness.

Today, the number 13 is still feared and 80 percent of high-rises lack a 13th floor, airports skip the 13th gate, and most hospitals and hotels do not have a room 13.

As far as the day Friday, it is well known among Christians as the day Jesus was crucified. Some biblical scholars also believe that Eve tempted Adam on a Friday and Abel was slain by Cain.

In 2013, there have been two inevitable conjunctions of Friday the 13th that have been noted exactly 13 weeks apart. Experts cannot collect accurate data about this superstitious day because people around the world avoid leaving their house, travelling and surgeries.
