Harris was born in 1953 in Henderson. His father was a carpenter and his mother was a bookkeeper. He graduated from Henderson City High and also took classes for a couple of years at Henderson Community College. He worked for 30 years for Gamco as a machine operator. But, his real passion was for ministry. Harris became a licensed minister through the General Baptist Church, and became ordained through Prayer Outreach Ministries in Glassco, Ky. As a result of this work he was honored to be appointed as an Honorary Kentucky Guardsman. Harris met the love of his life, Rebekah, and they were married in 1979. After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and having to retire, Harris dedicated his time to PanCAN, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and became its Team Hope Coordinator for NW Kentucky. John played the piano, guitar, banjo and enjoyed listening to instrumental music. He was also a HAM radio operator.
Harris was preceded in death by his parents, John L. Sr. and Nancy Harris.
Survivors include his loving wife of 35 years, Rebekah L. Harris of Henderson, one son, John Paul Harris of Henderson, two sisters, Karen Morgan of Henderson and Jennifer Jo Edwards of Louisville and nieces and nephews.
