Grow Garden Grow - Blooms of July

daisiesOWENSBORO, Ky. (7/8/14) — July is the month when annuals are blooming profusely and perennials are starting to bloom more.

Monarda (bee balm), lavender, lilies, and Shasta daisies are blooming nicely.

Daylilies are still in bloom as are hybrid tea and floribunda roses. One of the annuals that everyone loves is snow-on-the-mountain. This plant does not have any significant flower, but the foliage is the star. It has gray- green leaves with white markings and grows about 1 ½ to 2’ tall.

After the blooms fade it will have seedpods in a bean-like form dangling from the plant. It will self-sow in the garden or the seedpods can be taken off the plant and opened to reveal the seeds inside and be planted where needed. It can be transplanted to another spot when it is small.

It likes a sunny location and is adaptable to just about every soil, but prefers a light, sandy loam. Do not confuse this plant with snow-in-summer, which is a small ground cover with white blooms.

Red, white and pink begonias are blooming to make up the quilt garden at the Western Kentucky Botanical Garden.

This garden also showcases symbols of Kentucky such as Bill Monroe, the Cardinal, our state bird, goldenrod, the state flower and many other symbols not as well known about Kentucky.
