HENDERSON, KY - Arthur L. (Dee) Buchanan, 84, Hanson, formerly of Henderson, passed away at 8:20 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, 2011, at Western Kentucky Veterans Center in Hanson.
He was a member of Cairo United Methodist Church, a past superintendent of Sunday school, Moose Lodge No. 732 and served on the Henderson City-County Planning Commission. He was a United States Army veteran; during World War II he was assigned to the 3rd Infantry regiment serving in Germany. Mr. Buchanan was an avid supporter of Henderson County Lady Colonels basketball teams.
He was a retired truck driver and business representative for Teamsters Local 215.
Together with various elected officials, including the late Sen. Paul Herron Sr. and Magistrate Charles Alexander, his lobbying efforts resulted in the repeal of state taxes on private pensions. He was awarded the Kentucky Ambassador of Labor distinction, and he was a Kentucky Colonel.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Carol Seiler Buchanan; his parents, Alton A. and Annie Duckworth Buchanan; and one brother, Aubrey Buchanan.
Survivors include two daughters, Dee Ann Wood and her husband, Steve, and Donna Taylor Spencer and her husband, David, all of Henderson County; two sons, David Buchanan and his wife, Lydia, and Dwayne Buchanan and his wife, Ruth, all of Henderson County; two sisters, Frances Buchanan and Cheryl Vandiver; one brother, Ronald Buchanan; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and loving friend, Denelda Harmon.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Cairo United Methodist Church in Cairo. The Revs. Mark Jones and Fred Whitmore will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Benton-Glunt Funeral Home and after 9 a.m. Friday at the church.
