MADISONVILLE, KY - Carl Donald Matheny, 84, of Madisonville, KY, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville into the loving arms of God with his wife and children at his bedside.
He was born June 15, 1927, in Muhlenberg County, KY to late Rollie and Grace Tyson Matheny.
Carl was a charter member of Love United Baptist Church were he was also an elder, clerk, and taught Sunday school. He was also a 32 degree mason, a Kentucky Colonel, and a past clerk of the Muhlenberg County Baptist Association. He was also owner operator of the Lawnmower Center on Highway 85.
Carl was an inspiration to all those he met. Whether it be in his lawnmower shop, the bank, grocery store, or anywhere he got an opportunity to talk and to find out all about you and who you were related to. He loved people and got a blessing out of helping those in need. His love of the Lord shown above all and his knowledge of the Bible was a blessing to so many people. Carl taught Sunday school for over 54 years and if you ever sat under his teaching you knew the Lord had truly given him that calling.
Carl had a strong and devout love for family. His love for his six children, thirteen grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren showed in his face when they were around. That love was returned by those to who he was “Daddy” as-well-as the ones who called him “Papaw”. He instilled in each one of his children, strong Christian values that will continue on to these grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He married the love of his life, Geneva Marie Stewart on September 14, 1946. Geneva was from “the big town of Bremen” as he used to tease and say. Carl and Geneva were able to celebrate with many friends and family their 65th anniversary on October 1, 2011. That occasion was a happy one but a sad one too because he had just been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer a few weeks before.
Carl loved his church family and the many Pastors he worked closely with through the years. He loved the fellowship and being around God’s people, because he said, “that’s just a taste of what heaven’s going to be”.
He was survived by his wife, Geneva Stewart Matheny of Madisonville; three daughters, Pam (Terry) Lawrence, Carla (Hank) Dawson, and Valisa (Frank) Hodges all of Madisonville; three sons, Don (Janet) Matheny of Marion, KY, Dannie (Monica) Matheny of Madisonville, and Mark (Rae) Matheny of Madisonville; one brother, Earl Matheny of Cannelton, IN; one aunt, Clarastine Morrow of Evansville, IN; thirteen grandchildren, Stefanie (Rodney) Harris, Matt (Katrina) Dawson, Eric (Chrisi) Matheny, Devon (Ross) Atwell, Kerri (Wes) Cates, Michael (Misty) Matheny, Jennifer Matheny, Steele Pierson, Kelsey Hodges, Hannah Hodges, Rollie Matheny, Kaleb Matheny, and Zach Miller; and twelve great-grandchildren.
