HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. - William Thomas (Bill) Bowles, a former resident of Hopkins County, passed away at the Littleton Adventist Hospital in Littleton, Colorado on Sunday, December 30. Mr. Bowles was born on September 15, 1930 in Hopkins County to the late Nellie Sugg Bowles and Nemon Claude Bowles. He was preceded in death by a son, John Anthony Bowles, brothers, Wesley Owen Bowles, J.D. Bowles and a sister, Sue Wade Bowles Rowland; and brother-in-law, Homer G. Crabtree.
He graduated from Anton High School and attended the University of Ky for two years. He completed his Mining Engineering degree from Lain Technical Institute in Evansville, Indiana in 1960.
He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Crisis and was stationed in Korea for 16 months. He was honorably discharged as a SFC on December 7, 1954.
He began his mining career in 1949 at Colonial Mines in Madisonville and later worked in Appleton City, Missouri, Kansas City, Kansas and then to Denver, Colorado. He was a Preparation Mining Engineer for P & M Coal Company at their Denver, Colorado office. He retired in 1992 after 43 years with the company. Following retirement, he obtained his private pilot license and enjoyed flying in the Colorado skies.
He was a member of the Arapahoe Road Baptist Church in Littleton. While in Madisonville he was a member and deacon at Liberty Baptist Church.
He was a devoted husband, devout father and a loving grandfather. He enjoyed reading, traveling, and country and gospel music.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jerry Dossett Bowles of Littleton; two sons, Barry (Suzette) Bowles of Littleton, Colorado and Duane (Jan) Bowles of Overland Park, Kansas; two grandsons, Adam Bowles, and David Bowles; and two granddaughters, Bridgett and Leslie; and one great-granddaughter, Toni , and one great-grandson, Kody; two sisters, Martha B. Crabtree of Island, Ky and Judy B. Adkins (Bob) of Madisonville, KY; one brother, N.C. Bowles (Joyce) of Kuttawa, KY; sisters-in-laws Frances Bowles of Madisonville and Faye Bowles of Evansville, IN; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Barnett-Strother Funeral Home with Dr. Monroe Slaton and Bob Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be from 11:00 – 1:00 on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Barnett-Strother Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be: N.C. Bowles, James M. (Pete) Bowles, Wesley Bowles, Jr., Bob Adkins, Tony Adkins, Ted Adkins, with Gary Crabtree as an Honorary Pallbearer.
Memorial donations may be made to the Historical Society of Hopkins County. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
