OWENSBORO, Ky. (3/20/13) – Pets are part of the family, and the loss of a pet sometimes requires the same opportunity for closure that the death of a relative does.

That’s the philosophy behind a growingly popular business model that offers pet-owners the same sort of funeral services a person who has passed away would get. Nathan Morris, who co-owns with his wife, Megan, the first such business to come to Owensboro, said the decision to open a facility here was something they studied thoroughly after coming across a magazine advertisement.

“Two years ago I began researching,” he said, noting similar services are currently offered in much larger cities such as Cincinnati, Ohio.

One of the main factors in the decision was the opportunity it would create to provide grieving pet owners a dignified ceremony. Also, he said, it would take some of the burden off veterinarians who often have to handle cremation services for animals they cannot save.

“There’s nothing like this here,” Morris said. “There’s nothing dealing with, death, tragedy, and loss for pets. We didn’t want the vets to have that responsibility.”

At the facility located on Alvey Park Drive, Morris conducts services with the help of his brother, John. Lifetime Companion is a 24-hour facility with regular office hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Pet owners who are facing the death of a pet can make arrangements by calling 270-685-5111.
