HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. - Gladys Chambers Martin, 86, of Madisonville, KY, passed away March 28, 2013, at NHC HealthCare nursing home in Madisonville after a long illness. She was retired as a teacher in the Chapel Hill, NC, and Boston, MA, school systems and as a substitute teacher in the Hopkins County, KY, schools.
She was born in Lawrenceburg, TN, to the late Nina Alexander and Joseph R. Chambers. Her early education was in the public schools of Raleigh, NC, and she later earned a Bachelor's degree in English from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, followed by a Master's degree in Comparative Literature from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
After moving with her family to Madisonville in 1965, she was actively involved in the school system and community theater. She continued her love for education, theater, and the arts for the remainder of her life.
She is survived by a sister, Jean Chambers, of Swoope, VA; her husband of 63 years, Dr. Dan Martin, of Madisonville, KY; sons, Dan A. ("Andy") Martin, Jr., of Atlanta, GA; Dr. Joel Martin (Sue-deceased), of Oak Park, CA; Dr. Paul Martin (Dana), of Atlanta, GA; daughter, Dr. Nina Martin, of Nashville, TN; and five grandchildren.
At her wish, cremation will be followed by a memorial service. It will be held Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 4:00 P.M. at the First Presbyterian Church of Madisonville, KY.
