Marjorie Regina Salmon Sanders

HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. - Marjorie Regina Salmon Sanders, who passed away April 11, 2013 at the Paragon in Madisonville, KY, was born November 9, 1923, in Buchanan, Tennessee, to the late George C. Salmon and his wife the late Bessie Jane Lawrence Salmon. Her only sibling, John Waylon Salmon died in 1969. She was married to Milford Gray (Gary) Sanders on November 21, 1942, who passed away in September of 1969. To this union was born Ronald Lee (Alice) Sanders, and Donald Bruce Sanders of Madisonville and Janie Beth Sanders of Franklin, Tennessee. In addition to her children, she leaves 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Sanders graduated from Buchanan High School and Andrew Jackson Business College in Nashville, Tennessee. She was a Civil Service employee in Washington, D.C. and San Diego, California and was also employed by the TVA in Paris, Tennessee. After her husband was discharged from the U.S. Navy, they settled in Memphis, Tennessee, where her children were born and educated. After her children were in school, she returned to work in the Shelby County School system and Memphis City Schools as a financial secretary. She served one term as president of the Memphis Secretarial Association.

She united with the Methodist church at the age of 9 and served in many capacities in the church until recent years. She was especially interested in the women's work in the church and served as president of United Methodist Women in both Memphis and Madisonville, and in the Memphis District and Memphis Conference UMW. She was a life member of the E. E. Jeter PTA and served as president. She was a charter member of the Forest Drive Homemakers Club, and after retiring from Memphis City Schools, volunteered at Methodist Hospital in Memphis and RMC in Madisonville. She also did volunteer work at Glema Mahr Center, the Red Cross, Senior Citizen's Center, where she was named Volunteer of the Year in 2010, and the noon Kiwanis lunch. She loved to knit and sew and was a Master Gardener in Paris, Tennessee.

She was a published author at the age of 87, compiling recipes she had written for food pages in various newspapers in Tennessee and Kentucky into a book she named "Kennessee Kooking"

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 13, 2013 at Barnett-Strother Home with Rev. Dale Carden and Rev. Ken Hundley officiating. Interment will be held on May 4, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. in Woodhaven Cemetery in Millington, Tennessee

Visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. until the service time.

In lieu of flowers, love offerings may be made to the Youth Ministry at First United Methodist Church, where she was a member.
