Second Plea Entered in Dawson Springs Murder Case

breakingnewslawMADISONVILLE, Ky. (4/19/13) – In October of 2009, members of the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Department found two Dawson Springs residents Lynn and Mary Ann Moore murdered in their home. After examining the crime scene, they discovered that multiple items from the home had been removed, including a large quantity of firearms.
 
“Law enforcement was able to find one of the missing guns and traced it back to Eddie Goodnight,” stated David Massamore, Commonwealth Attorney. “At that time, the police did not know that Goodnight was involved with the murders.”
 
After receiving information the day after the murder about the stolen gun, lead investigator and Deputy Sheriff Matt Sanderson and his team were able to trace the gun back to Goodnight. The team was also able to trace Dustin McKinney by a tracking device on his cell phone. They discovered that soon after the murders that phone calls were being made to make deals with the stolen items. During the confessions of both men, it was led to believe that they initially did not plan to murder the couple but planned to burglarize the home. When they found out that the couple was home, they decided to go as planned; knowingly they would have to murder them in order to succeed with the plan.
 
Goodnight had made a phone call to another family member to confirm the right property of the couple. Upon arrival to the home, Mary Anne was in the kitchen and Lynn was in the bedroom. Maryanne was beaten and stabbed and then Lynn was shot twice. Both at the time of the robbery and the murders were under the influence of drugs. It is believed that the couple was a target because both men knew there were prescription medicines along with firearms in the home. “Not in all cases that occur, but most crimes go back to drug use. About 87% of cases like this are directly or indirectly involve drugs,” stated Sanderson. At the time, the family believed it might have been a murder suicide case due to some issues the couple was having at that time. However, law enforcement believed otherwise but didn’t release any information until it was ruled out completely.
 
Eddie Goodnight’s sentencing took place the morning of April 11, which he plead guilty on all accounts. “Goodnight plead guilty in court to killing Mary Ann Moore, complicity to Lynn Moore’s death and guilty to 1st Degree Burglary. Goodnight took life sentence on each account and 20 years for 1st degree robbery,” also stated Massamore.
 
Today, Dustin McKinney plead guilty to the charges against him. He will be serving life for the murder of Lynn Moore and the complicity of Mary Anne Moore and 20 years for 1st Degree Burglary. McKinney understood that pleading guilty he will not be eligible for probation and the minimum time he would serve would be 20 years.
 
“We were able to solve this case because of the hard work and consistency Sanderson and Bean were able to do and without them we wouldn’t have been able to get through this case. We have met with the families of the victims and they have been very supportive and agreed to the sentences, that way the families now have closure,” expressed Massamore.
 
“We had a lot of support on this case. Including Detective Aho from Minnesota who bent over backwards to help us find Goodnight. The family is very pleased with the outcome and we all have shared an emotional experience,” expressed Sanderson.
 
Both men will be in Louisville at a later date to decide where they will be assigned to their final destinations.
