LifePoint Church Reaches Out to the Community

lifepoint1 300WHITE PLAINS, Ky. (4/19/13) – In the city of hope, and just celebrating their two year anniversary at the beginning of this year, Life Point Church of White Plains is a nondenominational community based church that is very active within their community.

Chris Barnes, Youth Minister at LifePoint sat down with SurfKy to share his story and how they have been able reach out to people, especially our youth.

“I’ve been in ministry for six years now. I did not come from a religious background; I came from the streets… I was selling drugs… but when I got hold of the Lord, he changed my life. I’m not your typical Youth Minister, I have lots of tattoos and gauges and I’m a rapper. So God has set me up to reach this generation.”

The church started from the ground up. Barnes answered the call to be the student pastor for LifePoint 2 years ago. There for a while, he was a one man team but he had his fellow pastors to help him out as much as they could. “Right now, I am running a 10 person staff that is from the student department, which is a mixture of adults and students. We went from one ministry to seven ministries just out of our student department,” stated Barnes. “We have Unashamed, which is an entry point for anybody that wants to come from 6th grade through 12th grade. But we have college kids who come, and we even have parents who come with their kids as well.”

Barnes expressed to SurfKY that he has such a huge heart for young people and truly believes that this will be the generation that will turn this world around.

“Every Wednesday nights, we are full of kids who are on fire for God. Our ministry is very different than what most student ministries are. We have a live D.J. every Wednesday night, crazy lights… it’s very in your face but very personal,” expressed Barnes.

Thursday nights LifePoint has a ministry called ‘Rise,’ that is for leaders or for those who are high school seniors and above who have been walking with the Lord for a while and want to go up to the next level. “It’s Unashamed on steroids basically,” joked Barnes. “It’s a warrior themed atmosphere and we lay the meat out on the table, the word is very in your face.”

LifePoint also has a ministry that is led by the students called “Enchanted” for girls who are in 3rd -5t

h grade. This ministry’s sole purpose is to offer them an uplifting and positive influence in teaching them to be beautiful, radiant and a captivating daughter of the high King.

Barnes wife, Shilah also leads a youth ministry called “Radiant” for girls from 6th grade up to college age girls every Sunday night from their home.

Doors have been opened up to Barnes and his crew to be able to get involved and speak at local schools. “On Tuesdays my team goes out and hits the local schools and has lunch with them. I speak at South Hopkins Middle School every Friday morning at 7:00am at FCF (Fellowship of Christian Students). When I started there were only six students coming to that and led by teachers whose hearts weren’t in it. This is my heart, this is my passion. I have been doing this since last school year and up into this school year and at the end of last year, so many kids were coming that we out grew the room we were using and moved into the band room. We are running about 50 kids every Friday morning before school starts. These kids don’t have to come to this, but they are voluntarily coming to hear what God has to say to them,” stated Barnes.

LifePoint has also teamed up with a movement out of Birmingham, Alabama called “The Basement” led by Matt Pitt, which is the largest youth movement in the nation. It started ten years ago with four guys in a basement of a house. “We are working on getting them down here next month and doing an event with us,” continued Barnes.

On Wednesday and Thursday nights you can log on to their unashamed website and view the service live from home. Even if you aren’t able to catch it live those nights you can also listen to the services on Podcast.
