OWENSBORO, Ky. (5/27/13) – (Editor's note: The following is part of a regular series highlighting Chamber Ambassadors who are recognized by the Chamber for their contributions.) The concept of community support and service is something a multiple Chamber Ambassador of the Month recipient has developed a philosophy around. The Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce awarded its Chamber Ambassador of the Month Award to its vice-chair of the Chamber Ambassadors, Jim DeMaio, for the month of March. DeMaio, an Owensboro realtor with Century 21 Realtors, has previously won the award in September of 2012 and January of 2013.
The chamber awards the ambassador with the most events Chamber events attended each month. The award may also be designated to the chamber ambassador who introduces a new member to the chamber each month.
Jim DeMaio is an alumnus of Brescia University who graduated in 1995. The North Dakota native made the decision to attend college in Owensboro because most of his family had previously graduated from Brescia University, and as he put it, “I needed to get away.”
DeMaio played four years of soccer in his college career, as well as being involved in student government for 2 years. Currently, DeMaio is an active alumnus, serving as the vice chairman of Brescia’s Alumni Association
DeMaio is an active participant in the Owensboro community, as well, serving on a number of boards and committees. He was the 2011 president of the Greater Owensboro Realtor Association, as well as the 2012 president of Aid the Homeless, Inc., a local non-profit organization first introduced by the Greater Owensboro Association of Realtors. According to DeMaio, Aid the Homeless, Inc. has raised almost $90,000 between two annual gala events in 2012 and 2013.
Jim Demaio is an independent real estate agent with Century 21 Realtors in Owensboro. In a business where seventy-five percent of realtors fail in their first year, DeMaio’s 11 years of experience speak to his dedication and commitment to excellence.
“It’s not an easy business to get started in,” he said on Thursday. “But I love what we’re doing now.”
DeMaio shared his view on the current real estate market in Owensboro Thursday.
“This is one of the strongest seller’s markets I can remember,” he said. “In 2006 and 2007, the real-estate market was at its peak, but in the years following it took a nosedive. Owensboro, however, was not affected that badly. We weathered the storm because of the excitement of what was going to happen in our community and downtown.”
According to DeMaio, statistics show that nationally, the average age of homebuyers is those below thirty years old. DeMaio brandishes a competitive edge over his associates due in part to his commitment to excellence, but also due to his embrace of technology. DeMaio utilizes social media, specifically Twitter and Facebook, to keep in contact with the local markets and prospects.
“The National Association of Realtors tells us that people don’t like all business on social networks,” said DeMaio. “They use these mediums to be social, so I’m careful not to use a lot of social media marketing.”
DeMaio does, however, utilize a 24-hour texting system. When a customer comes across a property they are interested in, they simply text the number on the sign, and they receive any available information on the property, as well as a link to the website that has more information and virtual tours of the property.
“Usually when I show this to potential clients, it’s a slam dunk,” said DeMaio.
