Time-Out: Plenty to Do in Owensboro

oboro conv2 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (8/30/13) – What is there to do in Owensboro?

That was the question Kirk Kirkpatrick posed to several people at the start of an Owensboro Daviess County Convention and Visitors Bureau Meeting this morning. By the end of the roughly 90-minute meeting, it was a question every person in the room should have been able to answer.

Almost every person there was in attendance to talk about an event he or she was involved with, and topics ranged from efforts to provide public outreach in local schools to activities for children and families on the farm to the installation of “Big Bugs” for a public display at the Botanical Gardens.

In a nutshell, there’s no shortage of activities to get involved with in Owensboro, if you know where to look. That’s probably the reason why the largest block of readers on the Owensboro section of SurfKY News’ website is found on our events page. In fact, as I mentioned to the group at the festival committee meeting this morning, our most frequently read article each week is “This Week in Owensboro,” a weekly email CVB Sales and Tourism Development Director Sean Dysinger sends out regarding the CVB’s community calendar. So it’s not just that there’s a lot to do around town, but also people are looking for activities. If you’re involved with an activity and you’re not on the list, I’d highly recommend it.

It was mentioned at the meeting this morning that Kirk Kirkpatrick, long-time emcee of the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce breakfast and executive director of Friday After 5, will be working with the CVB’s hospitality committee to build a searchable database of event listings that anyone involved with the free-to-join group can easily access. The goal of the project is to help people on the front line of contact with the general public be able to answer questions like, “What is there to do in Owensboro?”

So what upcoming events were discussed during the committee meeting?

Sean Dysinger said he is working on plans for “Patriot Days” to be held at Pioneer Village in September. Joy Johnson with Owensboro Dance Theater is helping develop a public outreach program for schools with the help of “Dance Ambassadors.” Bill Tyler said David Rogers is getting ready to build his “Big Bugs” set at the Western Kentucky Botanical Gardens, which will be on display through the end of October.

Kevin Trunnell with Trunnell’s Farm Market unveiled a schedule of events planned this fall, including a corn maze, a “Farm Scene Investigation” that changes from week-to-week in terms of the murder suspect, and a pumpkin smash. Brian Smith with Diamond Lake Resort talked about the upcoming Labor Day Luau celebration.

An Owensboro Air Show will be held on Sept. 20 and 21. A Christmas parade is planned for Nov. 23.

Theatre Workshop of Owensboro is about to kick off its golden anniversary with a production of “Little Shop of Horrors” on Sept. 20, plus a variety of activities at the River Park Center on Sept. 7.

Dean Dennis with the Owensboro Convention Center told the group the Lion’s Club will hold two of its larger meetings next year at the Owensboro Convention Center. John Austin with the Owensboro Lion’s Club said the public is invited to attend the upcoming Soap Box Derby on Sept. 7 and 8, and Travis Estes with the River Park Center said the facility is getting ready to show its final “Movie on the River” on Sept. 15. After that, the center will begin preparing for a series of fall and winter events, including a live production of “Elf.”

Finally, Vicki Quisenberry with the Daviess County Alumni Foundation, called on city and community leaders to support the vision of a multi-sports facility that would house a larger swimming pool for competitions.

“Lane space at our current facility is very, very limited,” she said, noting that the item was considered one of the top topics at the recent series of community priorities studies held earlier this summer. The final list of topics is set to be unveiled at the Chamber of Commerce breakfast next week.
