Delois 'Dee' Westerfield Laffoon 82, of Madisonville, Ky

HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. - Delois 'Dee' Westerfield Laffoon 82, of Madisonville, Ky passed away at noon on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at her home.

She was born on December 8, 1930 in Ohio County near Dundee, KY. This is where she started school at age 7 and spent most of her school years. She moved to East Chicago, IL in 1947. Dee was riding a Greyhound bus North when she met her future husband. She married Donald M. Laffoon on December 24, 1948, she was eighteen and a junior in school. She had to keep her marriage a secret from the school or she could not graduate. She graduated Roosevelt High School in 1950. A quote from her yearbook by her picture reads 'why can't we all be happy and content as she.'

Her husband graduated the same year from University of Ky and shortly after was called back to active duty. She stayed in East Chicago with family while he was gone. Dee enjoyed the life of a military spouse, living and traveling through Europe, several U.S. cities and Okinawa Japan. She kept herself busy through military socials and officer's wife tea parties. She took art and cultural classes of the places they were stationed and she also worked as a grey lady (volunteer in hospitals).

Her main job was being mom to her active sons. She was active in their scouts and served as their den mother. After her husband retired from the military the family returned to Madisonville. After her sons graduation from high school Dee decided to enter a new career she went to beauty school to become a beautician. Starting work at First Lady and then went to work at Hair Designs, she enjoyed the interaction and socialization with her clients and co workers. She enjoyed cooking and decorating and out did herself at Thanksgiving and Christmas. She continued to visit family and travel with her husband spending summers at the lake.

She was a great daughter moving her elderly parents into her home and caring for them. She started her third career as a grandmother whose sole job was to spoil her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bonnie Westerfield and Desi Demona Canary Westerfield; and her brothers, Elvin Lee Westerfield and James Louis Westerfield.

Dee is survived by her husband, Lt Col Donald M. Laffoon they would of celebrated their sixty-fifth anniversary on December 24 this year; sons, George H. Laffoon of Platine, IL and Donald W (Barbara) Laffoon of Madisonville; two grandchildren, Rachel Williams and Alex Laffoon both of Madisonville; three great-grandchildren, Amber Williams, Max Williams and Nikolas Perez; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 in the chapel of Harris Funeral Home in Madisonville with Dr. Bob Morrison officiating. Burial to follow in Lanier Cemetery in Crofton, KY.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until the funeral hour Wednesday at Harris Funeral Home.
