AES Students Reach out with Compassion

dcps2 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (12/12/13) - Second-grade students at Audubon Elementary School are participating in a unique service project to share the spirit of caring and compassion during the holiday season.
 
Students and their families are donating boxes of tissue, which the students will decorate with artwork and messages of inspiration and encouragement. The boxes will then be delivered to local doctors’ offices, hospital waiting rooms and homeless shelters.
 
The idea for the “Tissues for Tears” project began when AES teacher Amy Haycraft was in a hospital waiting room while visiting a sick family member.

“I reached down and grabbed a tissue to catch my falling tears,” Haycraft said. “I noticed on the box was a label stating the tissues had been donated by a local Sunday School class and I was touched that a group of people had the vision and compassion to meet such a simple need.”
 
Audubon students have been learning about the meaning of compassion and empathy. Guest speakers have shared stories about the rewards of volunteer service, and the children have studied inspirational quotes.
 
Our media partners are invited to visit Audubon Elementary School at 300 Worthington Road from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, as the children are decorating the tissue boxes and preparing them for delivery.
