OPS School Board Conducts Routine Business

ops4 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (2/28/14) — Owensboro Public School Board of Education sailed through a light agenda at its meeting Thursday night, with highlights that included the recognition of several different students’ groups and a Teacher of the Year finalist.

Carrie Wedding, who works as an educator at Owensboro Middle School South, was honored for her accomplishment of being named a Kentucky Department of Education Special Education Teacher of the Year Finalist at a ceremony late last year in Louisville.

The board also heard from WKU staff regarding its intercultural program and the bus it uses to reach students who might live too far away to routinely visit the WKU campuses.

In regular business, the board approved a series of action and consent agenda items, several of which had already been presented to the board at noon luncheons held earlier in the month.

At a luncheon on Tuesday, OPS Superintendent Nick Brake presented a preliminary budget based on expectations in funding and requirements by the state in the coming fiscal year.

According to information provided by the district, a proposed salary increase for school personnel could cost the district more than $700,000 in additional wages.

It was pointed out the state would only cover a portion of that under the proposal.
