New Owensboro Museum of Fine Art Exhibit Celebrates Kentucky Artists

obo art 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (3/7/14) — A celebration of art by Owensboro and regional Kentucky artists will open at the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art, Saturday March 8, with a preview and reception for artists from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The public is invited to attend.

Sponsored by BB&T, the exhibition is designed to showcase the accomplishments of local and regional artists featured in the Owensboro Art Guild’s 52nd Annual Juried Exhibition.

The Guild’s adjudicated show continues a tradition established in the early 1960’s when the organization for local artists was formed to advance the quality of local art and to function as an advocacy group for the visual arts in the community.

According to OAG President John A. Medley, Jr., “The Guild’s 2014 competition for regional artists working in two-and three-dimensional media, will award merit and purchase awards of more than $3,500.”

Juror for the exhibition was Kentucky’s nationally prominent painter, Gary Akers, AWS, who selected the exhibition from 99 entries and designated merit awards. Purchase awards were selected by donors. The award-winning entries will be announced at the March 8 preview.

A Union, Kentucky native and a widely recognized realist artist, Akers has been painting in Maine every summer since he received an international grant in 1975 from the Greenshields Foundation of Montreal, Canada to further his egg tempera work and studies. His depictions of that region capture the ocean, rural landscapes, lighthouses and other subject matter reflecting the northeast coast of the United States. A large body of his work documents nostalgic life in rural Kentucky.

The exhibition will continue through April 25 and will be open during regular museum hours: Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Friday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m.

Admission to the museum is free (although voluntary donations are suggested of $2 for adults and $1 for children).

Access for physically challenged individuals is provided at the Atrium entrance in the 9th Street parking lot.
