School Board to Hire Three Assistant Principals for Elementary Schools

muhl school board 300POWDERLY, Ky. (4/29/14) — The Muhlenberg County School System Board of Education approved several new positions for instructors for the 2014-2015 school year during a special meeting Monday, April 28.

The board reached an understanding with Baptist Health Madisonville to administer the Kentucky Delta Rural Project. KDRP services 20 area counties and offers activities which include physical activity promotion, wellness education and establishing sustainable school wellness committees.

The board also voted unanimously to change the job title of the current resource officer to safety officer.

There was a brief discussion on creating three new positions for assistant principal for Bremen Elementary School, Central City Elementary School and Longest Elementary School.

"We need counselors available that are not caught up in the drama of discipline, and can be more involved in giving direction to students in the area of college and technical guidance, in the area of finding jobs after graduation," Superintendent Randy McCarty said.

Muhlenberg County High School Principal Donna Bumps agreed that increased emphasis on making sure students are ready for college is a growing concern and concentration in school districts across Kentucky.

"Increasing the number of readiness counselors is the direction schools are moving in," Bump said. "The counseling needs to begin before students reach senior high levels."

Board member Dr. Kelly Tartar expressed concern with the possible expense in hiring three counselors, suggesting that the board might want to consider hiring one counselor annually, adding an additional counselor over the next three years based on an evaluation of results.

Despite Tartar's concern, the motion to hire three new counselors passed unanimously.

A motion to create a position for an interpreter of sign language to be paid for with IDEA-B funding also passed without objection along with a decision to create positions for two district wide elementary behavior coaches.

Other items on the agenda included the approval to increase the football budget by $15,000 and making the program responsible for all helmet and shoulder pad reconditioning. The board also approved a $5,000 allocation for high school football uniforms.
