MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (6/26/14) — Many times tragedy somehow results in an unexpected outpouring of love and remembrance.

That is the case with the loss of 17-year-old Sadie Beth Smith. Sadie was a senior at Muhlenberg County High School and a member of the MCHS Mustang cheerleading squad.

According to her mother, April Smith of Drakesboro, Sadie had plans to attend college and pursue a career in nursing. But a car accident took her life in January of 2012.

Sadie's family and friends decided that the best way to remember her was by doing what Sadie loved to do. To help others who wanted to advance their education. That was the beginning of the "Swingin' for Sadie" softball tournament.

This July 19, 8 a.m. the Third Annual Swingin' for Sadie tournament will be held at the ballparks in Weir and Dunmor.

The first two Swingin' for Sadie tournaments have raised thousands of dollars for scholarships.

"We raised over five thousand dollars the first year, and over seven thousand dollars in 2013." Smith said. "This has grown so fast, we couldn't believe the response. We now have teams from throughout the state and also from Indiana. We will also be selling Swingin' for Sadie t-shirts to raise money in memory of Sadie."

Tyler Smith, Sadie's uncle, said on the Swingin' For Sadie Tournament Facebook page that this coed tournament has been a blessing for thirteen Muhlenberg County students.

"We started around two years ago to raise money in honor of my niece with the Sadie Beth Smith Scholarship Fund," Smith said. "We've been blessed to give out thirteen scholarships to seniors taking that next step to further their education. None of this could have been possible without the teams and players who have made this tourney what it is. The first year we had thirteen teams. Last year we had twenty-three. This year we are doing a sixteen team maximum due to lack of fields. Hopefully next year we will have a third field and make it the biggest turnout we've ever seen."

Sadie's sister, Hanna, graduated from MCHS this year.

To make donations or for more information contact April Smith at (270) 543-6662, or stop by the Beechmont or Greenville Old National Bank locations. You can also mail your donation to Old National Bank, 3740 Merle Travis Highway, Beechmont, Ky. 42323. Be sure to let the bank know you wish the donation to go to the Sadie Beth Smith Scholarship Fund.
