Muhlenberg Will No Longer Have a Radio Shack

Scott-DotsonScott Dotson (Photos courtesy Scott Dotson)POWDERLY, Ky. (6/27/14) — Scott Dotson is a well-known name in Owensboro radio, working on the air from 1977 to 1989 at WOMI, WVJS, WBKR, WGBF and other stations in the area, along with stations in Louisville and Omaha.

Dotson is also familiar to area sports fans from his years working as a high-school basketball and baseball official, and as a college baseball and semi-pro umpire.

In 1990, Dotson moved from radio to Radio Shack, working at Owensboro and Evansville Radio Shack locations. Dotson then moved to a successful career at Radio Shack in Central City in 2005. In October of 2012, Dotson moved the Muhlenberg Radio Shack to Copper Creek Shopping Center.

In 2013, Dotson's store had a more than 30 percent increase in sales from the previous location. But then, he says, the 2013 and 2014 ice storms hits, pretty much shutting down business at the store for well over five weeks.

"The ice storms shut us down 20 days before Christmas in 2013," Dotson told SurfKY News. "We picked back up after that but fell short when school was out for snow in January, February and March. When school was out, people didn't shop. It was a tough decision."

Dotson stressed that all Radio Shack warranties will be honored at locations in Owensboro and Madisonville. The Copper Creek location does have a going out of business specials on much of the store's merchandise including big screen T.V's and other items, on a cash only basis.

"I really hate to leave Muhlenberg County," Dotson said. "The economy is what it is. I can't blame our going out of business on Washington. Mother nature shut us down with five and half weeks of snow. If it had been a tornado or natural disaster, in my opinion, our corporate office might have been more forgiving. And, with another type of natural disaster, insurance would have kicked in. But it is what it is."

Dotson said the official closing date of the Copper Creek store will be announced soon.

As the doors close, Dotson says one thing he'll miss most is interacting with his customers and his customers interacting with his security dogs Wally and Sandee.

"Wally even had his own Facebook page," Dotson joked.

Dotson will be starting with the AT&T Corporate store next to Target in Owensboro in July.
