Icon of Muhlenberg Business Dies at Age 93

bob lawton picCENTRAL CITY, Ky. (7/14/14) ― An icon of business and leadership in Muhlenberg County has died at the age of 93. Robert Allison "Bob" Lawton died Sunday, July 13.

Lawton played basketball for the Central City Golden Tide graduating in 1938. He attended Murray State University before graduating from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., in 1942. After college, he served in the U.S. Navy, where he attained the rank of Captain, and served aboard the USS Case from 1943-1945 in the South Pacific.

He returned to Central City to join his parents in the insurance business after discharge from the Navy. The C.A. Lawton and Son Insurance agency is one of Kentucky's oldest independent insurance agencies.

Lawton became a director for First National Bank in 1952 and served as the bank's chairman of the board since 1981.

He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Central City, and was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Helen Hale Lawton, two months ago.
